Sally
There's this little girl, we'll say her name is Sally, she comes almost every
time I'm there. Lunch Buddies is made for kids who don't finish their
homework and also serves as a detention for kids who don't make the right
decisions. But this girl, she comes in and makes little crafts for her family.
As I talked to her, she told me about how whatever she was making was for a
member of her family. She made a nice house, made out of construction paper, for
her brother. She also made a card for her mom made out of hearts cut out of
paper. Sally truly loves her family. So much that she sacrifices her lunch-time
recess to make things for them. I know that most kids wouldn't ever do that.
Recess is the greatest thing in the world. She is such a sweet girl and I'm glad
I had the opportunity to talk to her and help her out with her projects.

Post-first day thoughts...
Wow. Well, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It passed kind of slow,
but it wasn't absolutely horrendous. I helped a little girl today and she was
adorable! We didn't get her homework done before she had to go back to class,
but she asked me if I was going to be there the next day! Sadly, I told her I
was only there once a week, but it was nice that she asked. That made me feel
all special. It was nice being able to help a couple kids with their homework.
It's not necessarily what I was hoping for, but it's something I can get used
to.

First day at Whitney!
First day of service learning... Not all that excited. I could be doing other
things rather than spending every Wednesday over there, there being Whitney
Elementary. For those of you who don't know, I'm required to volunteer somewhere
for my English 102 class. I must perform 15 hours of community service. I chose
to go to Whitney because I figure it would be easy. I was kind of hoping that
I would just be playing with kids, but looks like I'm stuck helping with
homework. One good thing about it is all the homework is 6th grade level or
lower. If it was any higher, I would probably fail. Hopefully this first day
goes fast and easy.
